Heads Up: Taking Concussions Seriously
About Sports-Related ConcussionsThere are about 300,000 sports related traumatic brain injuries in our country each year. Student athletes are sometimes urged to get back into the game. Fortunately, that attitude is changing due to research that shows concussions--on all levels--can be extremely serious injuries. Second Impact SyndromeSecond impact syndrome (SIS) occurs when a person sustains a repeat head injury-often starting with a concussion or similarly dangerous injury. Typically, an athlete suffers post concussion signs and symptoms after the first head injury. These may include headaches; visual, motor, or sensory changes; and difficulties with thinking and memory. Before these symptoms have cleared, which often takes anywhere from minutes to weeks, the athlete returns to competition and receives a second blow to the head. The second blow can mean serious brain damage for the athlete. Heads Up: Concussions in High School SportsThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), working in partnership with noted professional medical, sport, and educational organizations, is conducting an education initiative to help coaches prevent, recognize, and manage concussion in high school sports. As part of this effort, we are pleased to provide you with the enclosed tool kit, Heads Up: Concussion in High School Sports. Click on the links below to download the information:
