Trucking Accidents

The Corson & Johnson Law Firm is especially concerned about the dangers of 18-wheel trucks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2012 there were 3,921 people killed in crashes involving large trucks, a four percent increase from the previous year. There were 104,000 people injured in large truck crashes, an increase of 18 percent over the previous year. Overall, in the United Stated, 333,000 large trucks were involved in crashes in 2012.

Overworked, tired truck drivers, unstable loads, and unsafe vehicles are some the chief causes of these crashes. In fact, truck-driver fatigue has been cited as a probable factor in up to 40 percent of crashes involving 18-wheelers. Yet, one of the top priorities of the trucking industry has been to actually increase the number of hours truckers are allowed to drive. The Corson & Johnson Law Firm is working to help make sure just the opposite happens – limit behind-the-wheel hours, increase rest time between shifts, create tougher requirements for safer trucks, have better pay and training for drivers, and require more inspections for both the trucks and drivers. Some of the firm’s clients who are survivors of big rig truck crashes are themselves truck drivers or other commercial drivers. They appreciate the need to be protected from unsafe trucking industry practices. All of the rest of us need that protection, too.
