Brain Injury Awareness Month: Every Brain Injury Journey Matters

At The Corson & Johnson Law Firm, we respect the profound impact that traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can have on individuals and their families. As a personal injury law firm practicing in Oregon, we have represented many people whose lives have been permanently altered by brain injuries caused by vehicle crashes, dangerously defective products, and many other unsafe situations. Attorneys Don Corson and Lara Johnson have extensive experience advocating for those affected by brain injuries, trying hard to ensure they receive the justice and compensation they deserve.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to recognize the millions of Americans affected by brain injuries and to raise awareness about the challenges they face. This year, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is leading the charge with the campaign “My Brain Injury Journey,” highlighting the unique and deeply personal experiences of brain injury survivors and their loved ones.

The Reality of Brain Injuries

Each year, at least 2.8 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury. While fortunately many recover, others do not: more than 5 million people in the U.S. live with a permanent brain injury-related disability (that’s one in 60 Americans). Even people who seem to have a full recovery appear to be at increased risk for premature dementia later in life. Despite how common these injuries are, no two brain injuries are the same.

The Reality of Brain Injuries

A well-known saying in the brain injury community is: “If you’ve seen one brain injury, you’ve seen one brain injury.” The cause of the injury, the quality of medical care received, the survivor’s pre-injury life, the way their brain adapts over time, and many other factors can contribute to a journey that is both deeply personal and unpredictable.

The Journey After a Brain Injury

For those affected—survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals—brain injury changes lives in ways that are both seen and unseen. For some, aspects of life may remain the same, while others are forever altered. The path to recovery is rarely linear; it often involves setbacks, unexpected challenges, and the need for support from family, friends, and professionals.

Living with a brain injury requires immense resilience. Many survivors describe their recovery as a series of steps forward and steps back, sometimes facing hurdles they never anticipated. The journey can feel isolating at times, but no one should have to go through it alone. Support networks, medical care, and legal advocacy all play a role in helping brain injury survivors move forward.

Advocating for Brain Injury Survivors

At The Corson & Johnson Law Firm, for decades we have seen firsthand the struggles faced by those with traumatic brain injuries. From the physical and cognitive challenges to the financial and emotional burdens, we understand the need for strong legal advocacy. Our firm is dedicated to helping brain injury survivors and their families seek the compensation, resources, and support they need to navigate their journey.

We also believe in the power of sharing stories to foster understanding and eliminate misconceptions about brain injuries. This Brain Injury Awareness Month, we encourage anyone who has been affected by a brain injury—whether as a survivor, caregiver, or advocate—to share their story and help raise awareness.
