This segment of The Law and You features personal injury trial lawyer Don Corson addresses the need for resources to address child abuse and neglect in Oregon.
JOEL: This is Joel Block for The Law and You with Eugene attorney Don Corson. Don, when a child is abused or neglected, what legal help is available?
DON: Since 2000, there has been nearly a 40 percent increase in child abuse and neglect in Oregon. An organization called Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Oregon is dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect through legislative efforts to fund programs like in-home parent coaching, improved foster care training, Healthy Start, and Head Start. Unfortunately, funding is being cut to successful programs that have proven to make a difference in children’s lives. These are programs we should be supporting, rather than simply building more jails. We encourage you to learn more about the Education Begins at Home Act. Information about that law is available at CorsonJohnsonLaw.com.
JOEL: Thanks, Don. If you have a legal question, visit CorsonJohnsonLaw.com. The Law and You is a community service and does not replace the advice of an attorney.
