JOEL: This is Joel Block for The Law and You with Eugene attorney Don Corson. Don, Oregon has seen a spike in the number of fatal motorcycle accidents. What can people do to be safer on the road?

DON: Yes, Joel. Unfortunately, deadly motorcycle crashes in Oregon are up almost 20 percent. We’ve all seen the signs: Look Twice, Save a Life. In too many cases, it’s not happening. Give motorcyclists a longer following distance. Just as you would for a car, remember to check mirrors and blind spots for motorcyclists, and signal before changing lanes or merging. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable and can lose balance due to weather, road, and traffic conditions. What would be a minor accident in a car would be a fatal one for motorcyclists. Give motorcyclists the full lane width to give them room to maneuver safely.

JOEL: Thanks, Don. To find out more about motorcycle safety and required programs, visit CorsonJohnsonLaw.com. The Law and You is a part of Corson and Johnson’s work to Make Communities Safer.
